The Economic Commission for Latin America (ECLA) -the Spanish acronym is CEPAL- was established by Economic and Social Council resolution 106(VI) of 25 February 1948 and began to function that same year. The scope of the Commission's work was later broadened to include the countries of the Caribbean, and by resolution 1984/67 of 27 July 1984, the Economic Council decided to change its name to the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC); the Spanish acronym, CEPAL, remains unchanged.

The Caribbean Office of the ILO was established on the 20th of October 1969 in Port of Spain Trinidad. The Office serves 21 countries which includes the English- and Dutch-speaking territories. There are presently 13 Caribbean Member States, the most recent members being St. Kitts and Nevis and St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

Caribbean Amblyomma Programme (CAP)

The Caribbean Amblyomma Eradication Programme is a CARICOM/FAO/IICA programme, that started in 1994. Its goal is to eradicate the Tropical Bont Tick (TBT), Amblyomma variegatum, from the region. The strategy of the programme is based on direct animal owner and community participation. Government teams are mandated to ensure that farmers comply with the treatment schedules, supported by training and legislation. This is reinforced by intensive public information and sensitization campaigns directed to livestock owners and the general public.
